About me
Hi, my name is Salvora, I'm Spanish but I'm currently based in England, UK.
I have been watching Lost for a very long time, but I only found about Lostpedia a bit later and registered as an user fairly recently.
I still don't know very well how to do some things, but I really appreciate being taught by you guys, as long as you are friendly and nice!
Mostly, I'm here for the theory pages, and for the discussion of theories with other users.
I love LOST, and I love lostpedia. I am a big fan but none of my friends or acquaintances are fans, so I don't know anywhere else to vent out this passion for LOST! So I'd really love to be welcomed here and to get to talk to you and to learn from you how to take care of this great site.
Below are some of my ideas and preferences about the show.
Characters
My Most Favourite Characters
1. Locke. He's wise, he's got good instinct, and he's good.
2. Ben. He isn't good, but I don't think he is evil. I'm certain that he's got some ethical code that has not yet been fully revealed, and some noble purpose. And he's extremely intelligent. It's a fascinating character.
3. Sayid. Also very clever, intuitive, loving, loyal, kind, very determinate, and a gentleman with ladies. Actually, I'm in love with this character.
4. Sawyer. I like Sawyer because I think he is good and loyal, I think he doesn't show it because he is very afraid of being hurt. Let us say he is "complex." He has also undergone much evolution during the series, and that is very interesting. I don't think he is a fool, but I quite enjoy it when he is easily fooled. Such as when Hurley told him that people were going to vote him out.
5. Hurley. What can I say, everybody likes Hugo, right?
6. Rousseau. I really liked this character, she was probably my favourite female character. I liked her because she was very strong and determinate and because she was also enigmatic. I was very sad to see her go. I do hope we do get our Rousseau flashback.
7. Richard Alpert. I love this character and wish we saw more of him. Calm, wise, intuitive, kind, and he's full of humanity.
My Least Favourite Characters
1. Jack. Big control freak, jealous, insecure, stubborn, cannot recognize the wisdom and expertise of others.
2. Juliet. Why does she always look like a resigned victim?
3. Claire. For four seasons, this character has been mostly seen nagging or screaming, playing the very dislikeable character of a hysteric young mom. The rest of the time, she's mostly been the survivors cutie-pie. Truly, this character was not given any depth whatsoever. Plus, Emilie de Ravin is an awful actress. And the twist they are now making with this character (episode 4 x 11) is just not convincing.
4. Charlotte. Very bad attitude.
I'm most interested in...
1. The Island. Why can't it be found? Does it have any magic or supernatural property? Does the island have a will of its own? Were there any original inhabitants? Are there any of them left? Is there any connection between the accidental arrivals of the survivors, Danielle's expedition, the Black Rock... to the island? Were they brought by the island?
2. Ben and The Others. The Others are a fascinating lot: they are a a combination of pre-Dharma inhabitants, members of Dharma, and new recruits from the outside world... but what joins them? Why do they live together in the island? What's their common interest? What's their ethos, values, ideas, codes of behaviour? Who do they follow? Are they "good people"? What is, for them, the difference between "good" and "bad" people? How do they recruit new members? What resources they control on and off the island?
3. Jacob. Is Jacob human? Is it a god? Is it the Island? What are his powers? Why does he only speak to some people? Why does he ask for help? Where is his cabin? Why does it keep on moving?
4. Widmore. What's his connection with the island? Why does he think the island is "his"? What sort of entitlement or claim does he have on the island? Why does he want to take over the island? What's his interest in the island, design or purpose for it? How old is he? How did Widmore leave the island? Why cannot he get back? Why can't he find it? Do Ben and Widmore represent good and evil? Why can't Ben kill Widmore? Can Widmore kill Ben?
5. DHARMA Initiative. What did their different research activities involve? What did they expect to achieve? Why are many of their stations underground or fairly hidden? Who supported them outside the island? Who sent the food drop? Why have they kept on sending the food drop 12 years after the DHARMA initiative was defeated?
6. The mystery of Richard Alpert. Is he truly not ageing or is he travelling in time?
I'm least interested in...
1. Why Ben is wearing a parka in the desert.
2. Whether Charlotte and Daniel are going to make out.
My Theories
I have just started writing this page, and I hope I will make a list here of all my original theories. I don't keep track of them, and at some point is difficult to remember whether a theory was mine to start with, or I read it somewhere. So I shall start this list now, and we'll see how long this list becomes.
1. Healing and Falling Sick
I think one possible way to explain why some people heal on the island, why others get sick, has to do with their circumstances and how they react to them. I think it is perhaps a function of an individual's inner strength, or faith.
- On the one hand, if we look at the people who healed, Rose and Locke, we find that they had inner strength, they remained positive in the face of adversity, they didn't let circumstances defeat them. Thus, Rose stays strong even without knowing what has been Bernard's fate, and Locke also remains strong and travels to Australia to go on a safari, even though he is on a wheelchair and he is all by himself.
- On the other hand, we have Jack and Ben. Ben hears about his tumour by the time the plane crashes on the island, and we have also learnt that by that time he was disappointed about Juliet choosing Goodwin over him. Ben might have felt defeated, down, depressed. Similar story for Jack: he has had hopes about Kate, but she chose Sawyer. Jack is also now feeling let down by the fact that the freighter people aren't really doing anything much to rescue them... Jack is likely to be feeling tired, hopeless, depressed, even defeated.
- What about Shannon? She suffered from asthma when she lost her inhalers. It's hard to tell about her, whether she was feeling strong and positive or hopeless, but I'd be inclined to think that the latter is true of her, for she was quite sure that rescue would come soon, and her asthma crisis started after they found out about Rousseau's distress signal having been repeating itself for 16 years, and realized that rescue was not coming.
In short, on the island, people's inner strength converts itself into health and physical strength, while people's emotional weakness translates into physical weakness.
2. Wild theory about Charlotte's knowledge of foreign languages
We recently saw Charlotte speaking Korean, and this made me think a lot. I looked at her bio (as given by Ben) and it stroke me that it was weird that she had learnt Korean, for her bio didn't make much sense of how and when she would have learnt it. At any rate, many people didn't think that this was weird or striking, and I accept it is possible that she has learnt Korean sometime by herself. But there is another hint that she may speak a few more languages, as she was seen in her first flashforward picking a French newspaper to check the news and being asked something like "In how many languages do you need to read it to believe that they have found the plane?" (or something like that). Her reply: "How many languages are there?" This suggests that she speaks several foreign languages, and I find this even more striking and a bit more improbable. So here's a wild theory about this... What if Charlotte has a extraordinary gift like Mile's ability to talk to dead people and Desmond's ability to see the future? What if Charlotte effortlessly understands every foreign language and coded message? What if this is just a supernatural gift she possesses? Perhaps that is why she was chosen to go to the Island. Think of the hieroglyphs on the door of Ben's secret room, she might be able to read them? Also, she is a "cultural anthropologist" and being able to understand any language would be a very big plus in that career.
- Against this there is the fact that she is first seen accompanied by a translator of French, so this would suggest that she doesn't speak French and runs against the theory. But if she had such an ability she would probably hide it, and so she would pretend that she needs a translator.
3. Claire abandoning Aaron in the middle of the jungle
I think Claire has abandoned Aaron in the middle of the jungle because: (1) Christian has told her the island needs her, (2) but Aaron will be safer with the survivors. I think this makes the best sense of what's going on, although I really don't like this development. I am indeed wondering what they are going to come up with to explain the role of Claire in saving the island.
Abandoned Theories
Grey powder surrounding Jacob's cabin and "Help me"
The theory was: "The powder around Jacob's cabin is a fence, keeping Jacob within its bounds. Ben might have done this to Jacob, and that's why Jacob asks Locke for help." I'm now inclined to abandon this theory because I think that episode 4 x 11 showed that Ben's relation with Jacob depended on being the chosen one: that is, on being freely chosen by Jacob, and not under coercion. I now think Ben wouldn't want to keep this position by the use of force. Or, even if he wanted to, I think this episode showed that he can't do that (thus, he couldn't kill Locke, it was pointless).
Claire is dead
"I think Claire has died, although I don't know when or how. I think she has died for the following reasons:
- - In episode 4 x 11, she just wasn't herself any longer. Truly, that may be whoever it is, but that was not the character of Claire Littleton.
- - Whatever Christian has told her in order to make her follow him, it's very hard to imagine what could possibly lead her to abandon Aaron in the middle of the jungle."
The reason for abandoning this theory is that it has been confirmed in a recent podcast that she is not dying yet.
My questions
Where does Miles stand now?
I've been wondering why it is that in Episode 4 x 10 "Something Nice Back Home", when Frank runs into Miles, Sawyer, Claire and Aaron, in the jungle, he tells them that Keamy is going to kill them "all" - and "all" here includes Miles... but why would Keamy kill Miles? Indeed, where does Miles stand now? The last we had seen of him was that he must have been released from his imprisonment by Keamy and his soldiers, and he then went into Ben's house to pass a walkie-talkie to Ben so that Keamy and Ben could talk. What puzzles me is that at that moment he was with Keamy and the other freighter people, not on the side of either Ben or the losties, but he then chose to go to the beach with the survivors, instead of staying with the freighter people. Isn't this strange? The losties imprisoned him, and the freighties rescued him, so why did he chose to go to the beach with the losties? and why is it that Frank thinks that Keamy is going to kill "all" including Miles? Why should Miles be afraid of Keamy? On what side is Miles now? Isn't this puzzling?
Was Christian Shephard himself?
In episode 4 x 11 we saw Christian Shephard inside Jacob's cabin saying that he was not Jacob, but that he could speak on his behalf, and that he was Christian. Now, so far a big theory about dead people appearing on the island has been to say that they were the monster, or Jacob, or the island... or whatever, but not themselves. Remember what Yemi said to this brother Eko? Eko was assuming that he was seeing an apparition of his brother, and then Yemi said that he was not his brother. This suggested that Yemi was something else taking the shape of Yemi, but not Yemi himself. But in episode 4 x 11, we see Christian asked whether he is Jacob, and he replies no, and then says he IS Christian. And he wouldn't have said he was Christian if he was something else taking the shape of Christian, would he?
- In turn, this suggests Christian Shepard is truly appearing himself, even though he is dead. He is not the monster, he is not Jacob, he is not appearing in dreams... he is just Christian Shepard and he is just appearing.
- This opens the question: is Christian dead but nevertheless appearing as dead? Is Christian Shephard undead? Is Christian Shephard resuscitated?
