Desmond crashed on the Island during a solo sailing race around the world. The International Open Ocean Racing Association is the race's sponsor; Desmond calls it "Charles Widmore's race". ("Live Together, Die Alone")

Desmond shows Libby the "Notice of Race" book when they meet. On the back of the book there is a picture of Charles Widmore with the caption "Industrialist - Philanthropist". Above the picture are these words:
