- Williams is a graduate of the Manhattan School of Performing Arts.
- His first big break came in 1971 with the film Brian's Song, for which he received an Emmy nomination.
- He is arguably most famous for his role as Lando Calrissian in the Star Wars movies: The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
- He is also well known for his appearances in advertisements for the liquor brand Colt .45.
- He played District Attorney Harvey Dent in the movie Batman.
