Aaron Littleton (known to the world as Aaron Austen) was born on the Island, and is the son of Claire Littleton and Thomas; the grandson of Christian Shephard and Carole Littleton; half-nephew of Jack Shephard; and great-nephew of Lindsey. Before making a fatal mission to the Looking Glass, Charlie Pace acted like a father to Aaron, and passed on to him his family heirloom ring. Aaron was left behind by Claire in the jungle for unknown reasons when she followed his grandfather, and Aaron was passed through multiple survivors (Sawyer, Kate, Sun) until he made it to the freighter where he was then picked up by the helicopter. When the Oceanic Six made it to the mainland, Kate presented Aaron as her son to the public. For a few days, Jack read bedtime stories to Aaron, hoping to become a surrogate father before getting a message from Charlie that he wasn't supposed to raise him. Kate now lives alone with him in California, and has been warned by visions of Claire not to take Aaron back to the island.

Before the Island

Aaron is the son of Claire and her ex-boyfriend Thomas. Thomas was initially enthusiastic about having a child with Claire but later panicked and left her. Aaron was supposed to be adopted by Arlene and Joseph Stewart in Sydney before Claire had a change of heart. Richard Malkin, a possibly fraudulent psychic, told Claire that danger surrounded the baby. He claimed there was a couple in Los Angeles "perfect" for the baby, and insisted Claire catch Flight 815 to meet them. ("Raised by Another")

On the Island

Season 1 (Days 41-44)

New-born Aaron with his mother, Claire. ("The Greater Good")
New-born Aaron with his mother, Claire. ("The Greater Good")

While Jack was busy tending to Boone after the Nigerian plane accident, Claire went into labor outside the camp. With Kate's help, Claire delivered a healthy baby boy whom she named Aaron. His birth approximately coincided with Boone's death. ("Do No Harm")

Aaron received the nickname, "Turnip-Head," from Charlie, who often watched after him. Incidentally, Charlie discovered that the sound of Sawyer's voice was one of the few things that would stop Aaron from crying. ("The Greater Good") Charlie became very close to Aaron and Claire, and offered to let them stay with him after they got rescued. ("Born to Run")

When Danielle Rousseau found out Claire had delivered her baby, she devised a plan to kidnap Aaron. After attacking Claire, she kidnapped Aaron and took him to the black smoke she had made. Danielle was attempting to give Aaron to the Others in exchange for her daughter Alex. Charlie and Sayid rushed to rescue Aaron, and took him back when Rousseau realized the Others were not going to arrive. ("Exodus, Part 2")

Season 2 (Days 44-69)

Claire takes advice from Locke about Aaron. ("Abandoned")
Claire takes advice from Locke about Aaron. ("Abandoned")

One night, Shannon began screaming in the middle of the night. Claire took Aaron with her to see what was going on, only to be scolded by Charlie for waking the baby. Locke helped Claire put Aaron down for a nap the next day and listened as she complained about Charlie, saying he acted like the baby's father. ("Abandoned")

Claire and Aaron moments before the purple sky event. ("Live Together, Die Alone")

Claire introduced Aaron and herself to Mr. Eko and shortly after found out there was heroin inside the Virgin Mary statue Charlie had been carrying around. Charlie apologized when Claire confronted him, but she told him she didn't want him around her baby. ("The 23rd Psalm")

Charlie began having visions about Aaron being in danger because he had not been baptized. He kidnapped Aaron while sleepwalking, later insisting it was a misunderstanding. Later, Charlie intentionally started a fire to distract everyone so he could take Aaron to be baptized. When the fire was out, Claire realized Aaron was gone. Locke rescued and returned Aaron to his mother before Charlie could baptize him. Later, when Claire asked Mr. Eko about baptism, she admitted she had not been baptized either. Mr. Eko then baptized both Claire and Aaron together. ("Fire + Water")

Aaron became sick and developed a rash, at which point Rousseau told Claire that he was "infected" and Claire began to have flashbacks of when she was taken by the Others. She remembered Aaron being injected in utero with the CR 4-81516-23 42 vaccine. Despite Jack telling her that it was a common, non-threatening virus called Roseola, Claire began a determined search for what had happened to her during that time with Ethan. Along with Kate and Rousseau, Claire trekked to the Medical Station where she had been held. Claire did not find the vaccine she thought would be there, but she did find and take a blue bootie she had knitted in the nursery they had set up for Aaron. The next day, Aaron’s fever broke and he began to recover. ("Maternity Leave")

Some time later, Charlie gave Claire a small case of vaccine and a pneumatic injector he had found on the food drop palette. He told her there was plenty for her and Aaron. ("Three Minutes") Desmond, after his return to the Island, saw her using the injector and told her she was wasting her time.

When the Hatch imploded and the sky turned purple, Claire held her hands over Aaron's ears. Bernard moved Aaron and Claire to safety, helping them to avoid being hit by the quarantine door. ("Live Together, Die Alone")

Season 3 (Days 69-91)

Sawyer goes over to Claire and says something nice about Aaron, giving him a blanket to give to her. Sawyer does so awkwardly, making Aaron cry. Later, Sawyer brings food to Claire, who lets him hold Aaron. ("Left Behind")

The next day, on the beach, Charlie hears baby Aaron crying, but Claire is asleep and seems unfazed. Charlie comforts Aaron and wakens Claire to find that she isn't feeling well. Charlie takes the baby and leaves Claire to sleep. Later, Charlie is shown sleeping next to Claire's bed with one finger in baby Aaron's grasp and the other hand holding Claire's. ("One of Us")

Aaron is carried by Claire while following Jack into the Jungle. Desmond says he has seen a vision of Claire and Aaron getting into a helicopter and leaving the island. Before Charlie leaves for the Looking glass, thinking of Aaron as his own son, Charlie passed off his Drive Shaft ring. Later, Claire picks up Aaron and leaves with Hurley, but they do not see Charlie's "DS" ring, left behind in the crib. ("Greatest Hits")

Aaron cried at the exact moment Charlie drowned within the communications room in the Looking Glass, suggesting some sort of extrasensory perception of the event on his behalf. ("Through the Looking Glass")

Season 4 (Days 91-108)

Sun and Claire changing Aaron. ("The Beginning of the End")
Sun and Claire changing Aaron. ("The Beginning of the End")

While Sun and Claire changed Aaron, Sun remarked how she gets to have her baby in a hospital. Aaron accompanies Claire and the rest of the survivors to the cockpit, where he, involuntarily, goes with his mother and sides with Locke. ("The Beginning of the End")

At the Barracks, Aaron lives in a house with Claire. When Kate comes to the Barracks, Aaron interacts with her, and Kate remarks that Claire is a good mother. Claire remarks that being a mother was the last thing she thought she would be, and encourages Kate that she should be a mother someday. ("Eggtown")

Hurley looks after Aaron. ("The Shape of Things to Come")
Hurley looks after Aaron. ("The Shape of Things to Come")

Hurley was looking after Aaron while Claire slept prior to the attack by Martin Keamy and his team. Aaron was in Hurley's care from when they were playing Risk, until Sawyer had returned with an injured Claire. After Sawyer had recovered Claire from the wreakage of her house, she asked where Aaron was. After resting, Claire was reunited with Aaron. Once Ben had set the Smoke Monster on the mercenaries, Aaron escaped with Claire and everyone else. Aaron stayed with his mother after her decision to side with Sawyer and head back to the beach. She decided following Locke and Ben was no safe place for them both. ("The Shape of Things to Come")

The next day, Miles tried to help Claire numerous times with Aaron; however, due to Sawyer's mistrust in Miles, he issues him a 'restraining order'. Later, while still heading to the beach, Frank appeared from a bush warning them that Keamy was heading their way. While the group hid, Aaron let out a cry that almost led Keamy to their location. Claire managed to keep Aaron quiet long enough for Frank to convince Keamy and his team to leave before it got dark. That night, Claire woke up and noticed Aaron was not by her side. To Claire's suprise, she found her father holding Aaron. The next morning, Sawyer found Claire missing. He eventually found Aaron alone and crying, with no sign of his mother. ("Something Nice Back Home")

We later learned that Claire followed her father to Jacob's Cabin. When Locke entered the cabin, he found Claire there acting uncharacteristically nonchalant given the circumstances. Locke asked her where Aaron was, to which Christian responded on behalf of Jacob. Christian told Locke that Aaron is "where he's supposed to be". ("Cabin Fever")

Sawyer spent a day unsuccessfully looking for Claire. Sawyer, Miles, and Aaron made their way back to the beach. On the way there, the trio encountered Jack and Kate on their way to find the Helicopter. When Jack confirmed that Claire did not go back to the beach, Aaron started crying and continued to cry as Jack and Sawyer got into an argument. Kate eventually breaks up the fight and took Aaron into her grasp. Jack told Kate to take care of Aaron, then continued to the helicopter, followed shortly by Sawyer. ("There's No Place Like Home, Part 1")

Kate made her way back to the beach, along with Miles and Aaron. They arrived shortly after Sayid landed with the Zodiac Raft. Kate and Sayid decided to follow Jack and Sawyer's trail to the helicopter. As they left, Kate puts Aaron in the care of Sun. Sun then got on the Zodiac Raft with Jin, Daniel, and four other survivors. Daniel piloted the raft back to the freighter, where Sun encountered Michael. She appeared to forgive him for his previous actions, but just then Desmond appeared shouting for Michael. Desmond lead Michael, Jin and Sun, still holding Aaron, to a room loaded with explosives. Jin then told Sun to leave and she walked out onto the deck, still holding Aaron. ("There's No Place Like Home, Part 1")

Sun brings Aaron onto the helicopter before the freighter explosion. Kate is holding Aaron when the helicopter crashes and Hurley brings Aaron onto the life raft. Aaron is rescued by Penelope Widmore along with the rest of the Oceanic 6, Desmond, and Frank. Aaron sails with the Oceanic 6 to the island of Sumba. ("There's No Place Like Home, Parts 2 & 3")

After the Island

Aaron left the island under the care of Kate as a part of the Oceanic Six. ("Eggtown")  ("Something Nice Back Home")

2005

Aaron was on the plane that returned the Oceanic Six back to civilization. He is presented as Kate's five-week old son, making her six months pregnant when 815 crashed. Ten months after the crash, Jack learned of his relation to Aaron and Claire, through Claire's mother Carole after his father's funeral. ("There's No Place Like Home, Part 1")

2006

Aaron, around two-years old, lived in California in the care of Kate, who still refer to each other as mother and son. At the trial, Kate's mother told Kate of her great desire to see her "grandson", but Kate was strongly opposed to this. Jack does not want to see Aaron, possibly because his awareness of Aaron's true family, and thus did not visit Kate's home after the trial. Kate returned home alone, where Aaron was in the care of a nanny ("Eggtown")

When Jack went to see Hurley in Santa Rosa, Hurley told him that he's not supposed to raise 'him', most likely referring to Aaron. ("Something Nice Back Home")

Sometime later, Jack finally agreed to see the baby, and also begins a relationship with Kate. He read Aaron to sleep. Kate tried to convince Jack that he was a 'natural' at the job; however, as tension grew between Kate and Jack, they began to have arguments, eventually leading Kate to state that she doesn't want his abusive, alcoholic behavior around her son. As Jack screamed that Kate is not even related to him, Aaron walked in, scared. Kate rushed to Aaron to comfort him as Jack left. ("Something Nice Back Home")

2007

Claire's manifestation in Aaron's room
Claire's manifestation in Aaron's room

When Kate was in bed she heard noises and went to her closet and pulled out a gun. She ran down to Aaron's bedroom, where she saw his mother Claire. Claire said to Kate "Don't bring him back Kate, Don't you dare bring him back!", presumably referring to Aaron. Kate then woke up realising that it was a dream. She ran down to Aaron's room anyway, where she cried and cradled him.

What may have been some time later, during her confrontation with Jack, Kate angrily told him that she still had to explain to Aaron why Jack was not there to read to him.

Trivia

  • Nicknamed "Turniphead" by Charlie.
    • In the 2004 Japanese anime film Howl's Moving Castle, the character Turniphead (who is a scarecrow) turns out to be a missing prince who was under a witch's spell.
  • The name Aaron comes from a Hebrew word meaning "bearer of martyrs". Sun asked Claire what it meant but Claire said she didn't know.
    • The name could also derive from an Egyptian word, "Aha Rw", which means "warrior lion."
    • Other known meanings of Aaron are "High mountain", "exalted", and "of high station".
    • Arabic equivalent for Aaron is "Haroon" or "Harun" (هارون)
  • After asking what she named her newborn son, Mr. Eko informed Claire that Aaron was the name of Moses' elder brother.
    • Aaron was a spokesman of sorts for Moses, persuading the Israelites to follow his brother and performing miracles with his staff, which turned into a viper before Pharaoh (Exodus 7:8-14) and unleashed the first three plagues. Aaron joined Moses, Nadav and Avihu on Mount Sinai to receive the Covenant, and saw a vision of God (Exodus 24:9). During Moses' 40-day encounter with God, Aaron acceded to popular demand by making a golden calf, outraging his brother (Exodus 32). Aaron became chief priest after the Ark and Tabernacle were constructed. He died at the age of 123 on Mount Hor, and was allegedly denied entry to the Promised Land after he called forth water from a rock by invoking his own name ("I command") rather than invoking the name of God ("I command you in the name of God").
  • Aaron has met all the main characters apart from Ben and Boone.
  • Aaron is the name of Kyle Rayner, the Green Lantern's father, who was in the military and worked for a covert government agency. Aaron Rayner left his family when Kyle was almost three years old. Kyle Rayner is one of the main characters of Walt's comic book, originally belonging to Hurley.
  • The biblical Aaron is the great-great-grandson of Jacob (through Levi, Kohath and Amram).
  • Aaron in the Dead Sea Scrolls and other sources was the precursor of the line of the "Priestly Messiah" (as opposed to the "Royal" Messiah of the Davidic line).
  • Several people on the Island offered to help care for Aaron, especially Charlie who assumed the position of surrogate father. However, Sawyer was the unlikely person who was found able to soothe Aaron’s incessant crying by reading to him.
  • Aaron slept in a crib made by Locke (as a birthday present for Claire) in "Numbers", but he and Claire moved to the barracks and left the crib and Charlie's "D.S." ring behind.
  • It is calculated by the timeline that as of "Something Nice Back Home", he is 59 days old.
  • Aaron and Walt are the only two children among the middle section survivors.
    • Both he and Walt have been described as "special" (Aaron by Richard Malkin and Walt by Tom).
  • Aaron's bedroom in Kate's Los Angeles house is decorated with Australian stuffed animals including an emu, a kangaroo and a wallaby; this refers to his biological mother's Australian nationality
  • Aaron is currently being "raised by another" (Kate instead of Claire) despite the many warnings that Richard Malkin gave to Claire. Coincidentally, however, he was briefly raised by a Los Angeles-based family (Jack and Kate) as Malkin had originally intended. Alternatively, Malkin's warning could be interpreted as saying that Aaron should not be "raised by an other" meaning that it was very important he was not kidnapped and raised by the Others.
  • Aaron is a Scorpio, just like his mother, Claire. In astrology he is also an infant and not even old enough to walk, this very likely shows some kind of a strong connection between mother of the baby and the parent of that particular child throughout both of their whole lives; Locke remarks to Claire that it's good luck that her baby's birthday is close to her own birthday.
  • Desmond told Charlie that he had a flash of the future, in which he saw Claire and Aaron leave the Island via a helicopter. According to Desmond, this would only happen after Charlie sacrificed himself. ("Greatest Hits")

Casting

  • Extras casting director Julie Carlson is responsible for finding babies to appear as Aaron
  • For the second season she needed 27 babies.
  • For the third season, she needed 30 babies.
  • She spends a lot of time calling doctor's offices, mom's clubs and twins clubs.
  • The babies (boy or girl doesn't matter) all have to look alike, making close-ups difficult.
  • The babies soon outgrow their part due to the time frame on the show being roughly one episode per day on the island.
  • For emergencies, Carlson always arranges to have an extra infant on the set.
  • William Blanchette played Aaron in a flashforward at the age of 2. To prevent spoilers, he was credited as child. In the end credits of the episode, he was credited as "two year old boy." ("Eggtown")
  • Coincidentally, William Blanchette was also one of the first babies to portray baby Aaron in season 1.
